If I justify myself, mine own mouth shall condemn me: if I say, I am perfect, it shall also prove me perverse.

  6. Surely thou hast spoken in mine hearing, and I have heard the voice of thy words, saying, I am clean without transgression, I am innocent; neither is there iniquity in me. Behold, he findeth occasions against me, he counteth me for his enemy, He putteth my feet in the stocks, he marketh all my paths. Behold, in this thou art not just: I will answer thee, that God is greater than man. Why dost thou strive against him? for he giveth not account of any of his matters.
  7. Job hath spoken without knowledge, and his words were without wisdom.
  8. Therefore doth Job open his mouth in vain; he multiplieth words without knowledge.
  9. Lo, children are an heritage of the LORD: and the fruit of the womb is his reward.
  10. It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows: for so he giveth his beloved sleep.
  11. In the multitude of words there wanteth not sin: but he that refraineth his lips is wise.
  12. He that hath a froward heart findeth no good: and he that hath a perverse tongue falleth into mischief.
  13. Then said I, Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts.
  14. But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.
  15. But he, willing to justify himself, said unto Jesus, And who is my neighbour?
  16. And he said unto them, Ye are they which justify yourselves before men; but God knoweth your hearts: for that which is highly esteemed among men is abomination in the sight of God.
  17. Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect: but I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus. Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. Let us therefore, as many as be perfect, be thus minded: and if in any thing ye be otherwise minded, God shall reveal even this unto you.
  18. Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself.
  19. For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body.
