1 Corinthians 14:3

But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort.

  1. Let us therefore follow after the things which make for peace, and things wherewith one may edify another.
  2. Even so ye, forasmuch as ye are zealous of spiritual gifts, seek that ye may excel to the edifying of the church.
  3. He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church. I would that ye all spake with tongues, but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying.
  4. How is it then, brethren? when ye come together, every one of you hath a psalm, hath a doctrine, hath a tongue, hath a revelation, hath an interpretation. Let all things be done unto edifying.
  5. Whom I have sent unto you for the same purpose, that ye might know our affairs, and that he might comfort your hearts.
  6. Till I come, give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine.
  7. Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.
  8. Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers.
  9. Young men likewise exhort to be sober minded.
  10. Exhort servants to be obedient unto their own masters, and to please them well in all things; not answering again;
  11. But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost,
  12. And many other things in his exhortation preached he unto the people.
  13. And after the reading of the law and the prophets the rulers of the synagogue sent unto them, saying, Ye men and brethren, if ye have any word of exhortation for the people, say on.
  14. Confirming the souls of the disciples, and exhorting them to continue in the faith, and that we must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God.
  15. And Judas and Silas, being prophets also themselves, exhorted the brethren with many words, and confirmed them.
  16. Or he that exhorteth, on exhortation: he that giveth, let him do it with simplicity; he that ruleth, with diligence; he that sheweth mercy, with cheerfulness.
  17. Let every one of us please his neighbour for his good to edification.
  18. Now as touching things offered unto idols, we know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffeth up, but charity edifieth.
  19. All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not.
  20. For thou verily givest thanks well, but the other is not edified.
  21. For ye may all prophesy one by one, that all may learn, and all may be comforted.
  22. Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.
  23. So that contrariwise ye ought rather to forgive him, and comfort him, lest perhaps such a one should be swallowed up with overmuch sorrow.
  24. For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ: That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ: From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.
  25. Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.
  26. Whom I have sent unto you for the same purpose, that he might know your estate, and comfort your hearts;
  27. For our exhortation was not of deceit, nor of uncleanness, nor in guile:
  28. As ye know how we exhorted and comforted and charged every one of you, as a father doth his children,
  29. And sent Timotheus, our brother, and minister of God, and our fellowlabourer in the gospel of Christ, to establish you, and to comfort you concerning your faith:
  30. Furthermore then we beseech you, brethren, and exhort you by the Lord Jesus, that as ye have received of us how ye ought to walk and to please God, so ye would abound more and more.
  31. Wherefore comfort one another with these words.
  32. Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also ye do. And we beseech you, brethren, to know them which labour among you, and are over you in the Lord, and admonish you; And to esteem them very highly in love for their work's sake. And be at peace among yourselves. Now we exhort you, brethren, warn them that are unruly, comfort the feebleminded, support the weak, be patient toward all men.
  33. Now them that are such we command and exhort by our Lord Jesus Christ, that with quietness they work, and eat their own bread.
  34. Neither give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which minister questions, rather than godly edifying which is in faith: so do.
  35. And they that have believing masters, let them not despise them, because they are brethren; but rather do them service, because they are faithful and beloved, partakers of the benefit. These things teach and exhort.
  36. These things speak, and exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no man despise thee.
  37. But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.
  38. Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.
  39. And I beseech you, brethren, suffer the word of exhortation: for I have written a letter unto you in few words.
  40. By Silvanus, a faithful brother unto you, as I suppose, I have written briefly, exhorting, and testifying that this is the true grace of God wherein ye stand.
  41. Then had the churches rest throughout all Judaea and Galilee and Samaria, and were edified; and walking in the fear of the Lord, and in the comfort of the Holy Ghost, were multiplied.
